ThinkNode M5 updating firmware

I'm trying to use flasher.meshtastic.org in Google Chrome on my Mac to update the Meshtastic firmware on my ThinkNode M5. Chrome does not see the device plugged into a usb port. I'm sure my usb cable is a data cable, and I believe my settings are correct on the Mac and in Chrome. I've seen people say that I might need to hold down a button when plugging the device into the usb port. Is this true? If so, which button?

  • Hi John,
Thank you for your support of us.
This may be because your computer needs a serial port driver. Please try:

Please try installing the following CH340 driver on your M-series Mac computer: Then try again

    https://www.wch.cn/downloads/CH34XSER_MAC_ZIP.html

If it still doesn't work, please double-click the Reset button before flashing the firmware.

    Thanks!
    Warm regards,

  • Thank you for your help. When I tried installing the pkg file included in the zip file, I received repeated messages saying, "System Extension Blocked: A program tried to load new system extension(s) signed by “Unidentified - CH34xVCPControlDriver” that need to be updated by the developer." Following up with Apple, apparently the serial driver you've offered me is incompatible with my system. Can you offer another, more up to date driver? My system is a MacBook Air with an Apple M3 chip running Mac OS 26.3.1 (a).

  • I was able to find an old computer running Mac OS 10.13. There I was able to install the serial driver and update the firmware on my radio. The problem with the serial driver, however, still exists, and it will present itself again the next time there is a Meshtastic firmware update.
