Regarding your electrical and hardware modification, allow me to add a suggestion for replacing the current 2-pin DC Fan with a PWM Fan design if I may.
Here is my thought to modify my CrowPi2 when I’m ready to run with a Pi5 installed,
Modify the case structure for the Fan area to clear the Pi5 SoC.
Replace the current Fan with the 4-pin PWM Fan that came with the Pi5 official case and connect the fan directly to the Pi5 FAN connector.
